Congratulations to Jerry Chang for taking 6th place in Senior Mens Foil





Jerry Chang of San Jose’s Fencing Center Wins Bronze in France

Jerry Chang, 15, of The Fencing Center of San Jose, took 3rd place at the Cadet World Cup in Cabrile, France, November 29t,h. He competed with 439 fencers in the under-17 age category from all over the world. In July 2009, Chang won the gold in the Youth -14 Foil Championships at Summer Nationals in Grapevine Texas. He also placed 7th in the Division I Men’s foil.

Jerry has been at The Fencing Center, coached by Natasha Maximovich, since he was ten years old. A sophomore at Mountain View High, he is the son of Jonathan and Lucy Chang. Also on the U.S. team attending the Cadet World Cup from The Fencing Center were Jason, Jerry’s brother, Edbert Chan and Stephanie Chan in the women’s cadet foil.

Jerry Chang and other nationally-ranked fencers from The Fencing Center will be going to Pittsburg, PA for the Division I North American Cup this coming weekend, December 4 - 6.





Mountain View High Fencing Club

Jason Chang, 16, TFC's two-time NAC cadet foil finalist this 2009 season, organized a fencing club of his fellow Mountain View high students. Most of the group had never picked up a foil before, but with Jason's coaching, after a few weeks have good basics and are enjoying bouting on the electric strips. The club meets at TFC on Friday nights and is mentored by TFC volunteers. "We're having a lot of fun," says Jason, a junior, on how his classmates are taking to the sport, " and now I'd like to see us having meets with other high school clubs."





TFC Brings Home Medals at Sierra Nevada Open

Congratulations to our epee veterans who started off the season on Friday September 25th at the 2009 Sierra Nevada Open by winning the epee team tournament. Our Vets then went on to sweep the Veteran tournament the following morning taking the top 3 spots out of a field of 33 competitors. The medal count for Saturday was

  • Gold - Mike Botenhagen
  • Silver - Jere Bothelio
  • Bronze - Mark Wheeler

Congratulations also to Kyle Yamasaki for taking Silver in the Open Mixed Epee event out of a field of 45 competitors.

24 well-motivated young fencers survived 6 days of rigorous training by TFC's awesome staff of Eric Hansen, Natalya Maximovich, Craig Van de Vooren, Connie Yu, & George Zee. This year's camp featured good lunches, innovative conditioning games, drills and lessons in epee, foil and sabre. At the end of camp, weary fencers agreed they improved their skills, learned training ideas for life and had a lot of fun, too.
